Another cupcake in the Halloween genre is the pumpkin cupcake! Again, this idea came from the Hello, Cupcake series (can you tell I’m obsessed with them yet?).
I bought orange cupcake liners in a metallic finish to keep the overall orange theme going. Basic butter-cream recipe on top of a typical vanilla cake. When I make highly decorative cupcakes, I usually stick with a solid, dense cake (no filling) so the structure remains intact.
The key to getting a good pumpkin shape is to really mound that frosting up into a dome shape before rolling the cupcake in the orange sugar. After it’s rolled, you just make slight indents of where you want to pipe your lines for the pumpkin on the outside. A green colored licorice stick, chopped into small pieces, serves as the cute little stump on top.
A big hint, always make sure your cupcakes are completely cool before attempting any frosting tricks. If you frost while it’s still warm and then try and turn the cupcake over to roll it in the sugar…you are going to have a messy situation on your hands! Literally.
